Major Directories
A Directory is a database of web sites, however most don’t rely on spiders, with one major exception. Yahoo! is the most popular human-edited directory and has it's own spider driven index.

A Yahoo category listing is still worth consideration, because your site is listed promptly and from then on you simply renew it once each year. Your business name is used as the site title, consequently SEO is limited to writing a keyword rich description when you submit the site.

Search Engine Spiders
A Search engine is also a database built by spiders or robots. Search engine spiders span hundreds of thousands of pages a day, many will also follow links and find new pages independently.

Google for example, can detect new pages to add to its index in Yahoo and many others. Spiders can't see graphics, most can't read JavaScript or Flash content/animations, hear sounds and arrive most without a map of your site navigation.

The easier and faster you can make the span for the Spider, the higher your pages will rank and more pages will be added per visit.

The most popular spider-driven search engines are Google and Yahoo. Updates at Google can be a few days and Yahoo is monthly.

A common myth is to buy say, ten domains which all point to the one website, the strategy being you'll get more visitors. However you have only one site, so far as the search engines are concerned and the other nine are duplicate or spam.

If diversions are used to redirect visitors from the nine empty domains across to the prime domain where the site content is online, the whole network will usually be penalized in the rankings.
